                                                                                        Let's Rewind!

Let's rewind it aaalll the way back!

That's right, we're going through the flooring of the decades!

A little nostalgia on this Friday afternoon, a perfect way to kick off your weekend.

Let's get into it, starting out with the groovy 60's.

Now that the picture gave it's grooving optical illusion, let's discuss what the 60's floors were about!

Carpeting dominated the 1960s. 1968 marked a significant shift in the carpet industry. Even though wall-to-wall carpeting had been around earlier, its installation cost, which involved hand-sewing seams, restricted its usage to the wealthy.

However, in 1968, a new method was introduced in the carpet industry to glue seams together, making installation more affordable and widespread. During that period, hardwood floors were deemed high maintenance due to the need for regular buffing and waxing. Consequently, the lower maintenance of carpets made them the preferred flooring choice, often used to cover existing hardwood floors.

70's

Shag carpet, in the wonderful avocado color, as well as the harvest gold. Shag was in and just about everyone had it! It was about 4 inches long and it got it's resilience from raking it.

Along with the shag, there was also the blend of the 60's trend of wall to wall carpeting. Almost everywhere in the house had some. Even in some kitchens experts say. Was this your house?

There was also a big trend of linoleum back then. It was easy to clean, durable and water resistant. Plus it was safer for china (in case it was dropped.)

A floor no one can forget (especially after having to rip it up)!

Can you guess what decade we're in now? Just kidding, between the obvious counting and neon colors, no one could miss the 80's!

Vinyl was the fantabulous flooring of the 80's. It was popular for it's easy maintenance for hard-working parents. Which let's be honest, you were probably one of the ones who washed the floor more frequently.

Vinyl had also became popular in the 80's because it replaced the linoleum squares, which had to be waxed regularly. So it saved time and money for everyone, switching over to vinyl.

Wall to wall carpeting was still a popular trend at this time.

Smells like hardwood flooring.

No for real! The 90's engineered hardwood floors stole the spotlight with their fancy pre-finished wood layers in a rainbow of colors and wood types.

Meanwhile, ceramic tile flooring boomed with quicker and cheaper manufacturing, becoming the new cool kid in town.

Y2K, when everyone though the world was going to go away!

You know what didn't go away? Carpeting.

Carpeting was still very common in the 2000's, especially for the lived in areas. Although people starting getting creative and experimenting with putting different floor together.

Berber 12x12 carpets next to some ceramic tile, oh it was the style!

2010-2018

HGTV has played an extreme roll in influencing the populations decision on flooring choices.

Whether you watch the Gain's, The Fixer Uppers, or The Property Brothers, you most likely have been influenced at some point in time.

As with many people across the country, the trend for hard surfaces on the first floor over took everyone's home. This creates a clean look and feel. Which is a popular aesthetic many Americans are after.

Pairing with carpet upstairs for a more relaxed and comfortable feel. The color grey also boomed during this time.

I'm sure we all have grey somewhere in our houses to this day, I know I do!

That's it for this weeks Blog About it Friday's! Tune in next week to see what the current flooring trends are.

As always, thanks for reading! :)
